The Group held its latest meeting in Sofia/Bulgaria at Djingov, Gouginski, Kyutchukov & Velichkov on Friday 28th October 2016.

During the public session, the ELG’s members visited Aurubis’s site near Sofia and Mr. Georgi Nikolov, General Secretary of Aurubis Bulgaria AD presented the company and the copper market.

Aurubis, a leading copper producer and the largest copper recycler worldwide, was founded in 1866 and produces high-quality copper from copper concentrates and recycling materials and processes it into intermediate products. The copper market is in expansion: in 1980 the market volume was about 9 million tons, whereas today the quantity of refined copper produced and processed is roughly 22 million tons. Asia has become the main drive of the growth in copper demand. Europe remains an important center of global copper demand, with a consumption of about 3.6 million tons of copper. Due to its material properties (notably its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity), copper is ideally suited for use in electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunications.
